Level crossing ahead
A red triangle showing a gate warns of a level crossing with a barrier or gate ahead - where the road crosses a railway line.

What it means
Never enter the crossing unless the road beyond is clear, so you can drive straight over without stopping on the rails. Obey the traffic lights and barriers: a steady amber then red means stop; never zigzag round a half-barrier; and if you break down on the crossing, get everyone out and phone the signaller using the number on the crossing phone. A separate 'no gate or barrier' version exists for open crossings.

Anywhere a road crosses a railway at the same level - common on rural and edge-of-town roads.

Approach ready to stop, check the road ahead is clear before you roll on, and cross without hesitating or changing gear on the rails. Stopping on a crossing is dangerous and a serious fault.

What do I do if the lights start flashing as I approach?
Stop at the white line. A train is coming; the barriers will fall. Never try to beat the barrier or zigzag around a half-barrier.
What if I break down on the crossing?
Get everyone out and clear of the crossing, then use the railway phone to call the signaller. Only move the car if there's time and they tell you to.
