Why learn in an automatic?

Automatic cars remove the hardest mechanical part of learning - clutch control and gear changes - so you can put all your attention on the road, other traffic, and building good habits.

In stop-start city driving, that makes a real difference: fewer stalls, less stress at junctions and hills, and steadier early progress.

One thing to know: passing your test in an automatic gives you a licence for automatic cars only. If you want to drive manuals too, see our manual lessons.

DVSA points to an average of around 45 hours of professional lessons plus about 22 hours of private practice - roughly 67 hours - before most people are ready for their test.

But there's no set minimum. How many you'll need depends on how quickly things click, how much private practice you get, and where you're starting from. We design your course around you and adjust as we go, so you're never paying for lessons you don't need.

As a rough guide, most of our learners are ready for their first test after around 40-80 hours with us.

Common questions

How many automatic driving lessons will I need?
There's no fixed number. DVSA's guide is around 45 hours of lessons plus 22 of private practice, and we usually suggest 40-80 hours with us. Many learners need slightly fewer in an automatic, because there's no clutch or gears to master, so more of each lesson goes on the road itself.
Is it easier to pass in an automatic?
A lot of people find it calmer and quicker. With no clutch, gears or stalling to think about, you can put your attention on hazards, junctions and observation - the things the test actually rewards. The trade-off is that you get an automatic-only licence.
Can I drive a manual if I pass in an automatic?
Not straight away - an automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence. But with every electric car being automatic and most new cars heading that way, plenty of drivers never need manual. If you do later, you can take manual lessons and upgrade.
Are automatic lessons worth it?
For most London learners, yes. City driving is stop-start, automatics handle it smoothly, and passing sooner can save money even if the hourly rate is a touch higher. We'll always give you an honest steer for your situation.
How soon can I take my test?
As soon as you're ready - but book early. Test slots are often 2-3 months out, so we get yours booked ahead and look for cancellations to move it sooner.
