Money questions, answered first

When do I start earning - and how much?

When do I start earning?

After Part 2, not after everything. Pass the driving-ability test and you can teach paid lessons on a trainee licence with us while you train for Part 3 - typically months before you're fully qualified.

How much can I earn?

You set your own lesson rate, so income is your rate × hours taught, minus running costs. Full-time or around family, you choose the hours - and a full diary through our franchise means the hours are there to teach.

What are realistic numbers?

That depends on your area's going rate and your hours - and UK advertising rules mean we won't print a made-up average. Ask us and we'll walk you through honest, local numbers instead.

Why it's a good time

The market is on a good instructor's side

This isn't hype - it's the shape of the market right now, and it is especially true in London.

Instructors are in short supply

There are around 43,000 approved instructors today (DVSA, 2025), down from roughly 46,000 a decade ago - while demand for lessons hasn't fallen. A capable, qualified instructor is rarely short of pupils, and in London the shortage is sharper still.

Quality lets you charge more

With real training and a recognised brand behind you, you can sit above the local going rate instead of competing on price. Good instructors in London are at the top of the range.

Cantonese or Mandarin is a premium niche

A large number of London learners want to be taught in their first language, and very few instructors can. If you can, you're offering something people actively search for - and can charge accordingly.

Real time for your family and life

You set your own hours and days, so you can work around the school run, other commitments, or a quieter season. Shaping your own week is one of the job's genuine perks.

Is it worth it? Honestly, yes.

Learning to drive never goes out of fashion - every year a fresh wave of learners across London and the UK needs patient, qualified instructors. That demand is steady and local, so your work comes to you.

As an approved driving instructor you are self-employed: you choose your hours, your area, and how much you work - around family, a second job, or as a full-time career.

We won't pretend it's effortless - it's a real job with real costs (your car, insurance, tax) and you build up a base of pupils over time. But with our franchise those pupils are there from day one, so the slow part of going solo is handled for you.

Who it suits

You don't need to be a natural teacher - that is what our training is for. What helps is patience, liking people, and wanting work that fits around your life rather than the other way round.

It suits career-changers who want out of a 9-to-5, parents fitting work around the school run, and anyone after a steady second income or a full-time career they genuinely control.

Why do it with TOFU

Going solo means finding your own pupils and building a brand from nothing. With TOFU you don't:

  • Pupils from day one through our franchise - so you earn sooner, not eventually
  • The TOFU brand and marketing working for you, instead of a blank slate
  • Booking and admin support, so your evenings stay yours
  • A community of instructors who teach the calm, structured TOFU way

Why TOFU

Not a random trainer and a textbook.

Most schools hand new instructors a junior trainer and a workbook. We're led by a head of instruction with 27+ years behind the wheel and in the classroom - and here's how training with TOFU actually works, written as answers to what people ask us most.

01

Earn before you fully qualify

Pass Part 2 and we sponsor your trainee licence, so you teach paid lessons while preparing for Part 3 - income starts during training, not after it.

02

Pupils from day one

“Will I actually get work?” Yes - our franchise fills your diary, so you spend your hours teaching and earning instead of hunting for pupils.

03

A plan for the two-year window

You get three attempts at each test within two years of passing Part 1. We plan your route around that clock from day one, so a setback is a delay - not a restart.

04

A crafted syllabus, not guesswork

We design our training with university lecturers and refine it every year - built for both a quicker pass and genuinely good teaching.

05

Led by a 27-year head of instruction

Our head of instruction has 27+ years teaching and training drivers: the DVSA standards known inside out, a real feel for how the tests and the market have changed, and having seen exactly what makes instructors succeed or struggle. Most schools lean on junior staff - you get that senior experience, kept calm, casual and genuinely fun.

06

Real 1:1, in person

Genuine one-to-one, in-person instructor training - not group webinars or a self-study pack you work through alone.

07

Real pupils, real conditions

You learn to teach real learners in real traffic - which is exactly what the job, and the Part 3 test, actually measure.

08

Transparent, fair pricing

“What's the catch?” There isn't one: reasonable, clearly-stated training fees, and no hidden per-pupil lesson charges once you're teaching.

09

Built for our community

A London-based school founded by Hongkongers, training in English, Cantonese or Mandarin - and past trainees build their careers with us.
