What it means
Humps are placed where low speed matters most: residential streets, near schools and around hospitals. Slow to a speed that takes them comfortably (often a 20 mph zone), stay smooth, and don't swerve to straddle or avoid them - that puts you in the path of oncoming traffic or pedestrians. A plate often shows the distance the humps cover.

On your driving test
Read the sign and settle your speed before the first hump. Braking hard on a hump, or weaving to dodge them, are both faults - and uncomfortable for any passenger, which the examiner is.
