What it means
It's a rare sign but a genuinely serious one: the road runs right up to deep water with nothing to stop a vehicle going in. Slow right down, keep well back from the edge, and take extra care in the dark, in fog, or when the surface is wet or icy.

Harbours, docks, marinas, canal and riverside roads, and some ferry approaches.

On your driving test
Unlikely on a test route, but it's in the theory-test sign bank. The point is caution: reduce speed and keep your distance from an unprotected edge.
