Theory test prep

The theory test is two parts taken in one sitting: multiple choice first, then hazard perception. You must pass both on the same day. Here is how each works and where to practise.

Part 1: multiple choice

  • 50 questions, and you need 43 correct to pass.
  • You get 57 minutes. Three of the questions are based on a short video clip of a driving scenario.
  • Questions are drawn from the Highway Code, traffic signs and safe driving, so study those and you are most of the way there.

Part 2: hazard perception

  • You watch 14 video clips, each with at least one developing hazard. One clip has two, so there are 15 to spot.
  • Click as soon as you see a hazard developing. The earlier you spot it, the more points, up to 5 per hazard. The pass mark is 44 out of 75.
  • Do not click continuously or in a pattern to game it. If you do, you score zero for that clip.

Cost, and how long it lasts

  • The car theory test costs £23.
  • Your pass certificate lasts 2 years. You must pass your practical test within that window, or you will have to take the theory test again.
