What it means
Signalling early enough that others have time to react, but not so early that it looks like an earlier turning.
What a fault looks like
A signal too late to be useful, or so early it suggests the wrong turning, is a driving fault; badly timed signalling that misleads someone can be serious.
What learners get wrong
Signalling at the very last second, or flicking it on before a junction you are not taking, confusing drivers waiting to emerge.
What we recommend
Time the signal to the turning you mean: on after you have passed any earlier one, and early enough to give following traffic a chance to plan.
