What it means
Giving a signal only when it would actually help another road user - a driver, rider, cyclist or pedestrian - to know what you intend to do.
What a fault looks like
A missing signal where one was clearly needed, or a pointless one that could confuse, is a driving fault; a misleading signal that makes someone act can be serious.
What learners get wrong
Signalling out of habit at every junction even when nobody is around, or forgetting to signal when a waiting pedestrian or driver really needed to know.
What we recommend
Before each signal, ask whether it would help anyone. Signal in good time when it does, and skip it when the road is genuinely empty.
