Response to signs / signals · Driving test fault

Traffic lights

#5 most common reason people fail

What it means

Acting correctly at traffic lights: stopping properly at red, going on green only when the way is clear, and dealing with amber and filter arrows correctly.

What a fault looks like

Creeping over the stop line, or hesitating on a clear green, is a driving fault; going through a red, or into a junction that is not clear, is serious or dangerous.

What learners get wrong

On green, watching the light instead of the junction, and moving before checking the road ahead is actually clear.

What we recommend

Green means go if clear, not just go. When it changes, look into the junction first - pedestrians finishing crossing, cars still clearing - then move.
