Response to signs / signals · Driving test fault

Traffic controllers

What it means

Responding correctly to people directing traffic - police, school crossing patrols, roadworks operatives - whose signals override the normal rules.

What a fault looks like

Missing or hesitating at a controller's signal is a driving fault; ignoring one, or moving when told to stop, is serious or dangerous.

What learners get wrong

Watching the traffic lights instead of the person waving you on or holding you, especially at roadworks.

What we recommend

A person directing traffic overrides the lights and signs - do exactly what they signal, and wait for a clear instruction before moving.
