What it means
Pulling away smoothly without stalling, rolling back or lurching - clutch, gas and handbrake working together, including on a hill or at an angle behind a parked car.
What a fault looks like
Stalling once is usually a driving fault; repeatedly stalling, or rolling back into the car behind on a hill, can become serious.
What learners get wrong
Rushing the clutch up to the biting point, or lifting the handbrake too early or too late, so the car stalls or rolls.
What we recommend
Find the bite slowly and hold it a beat before releasing the handbrake. On a hill, a touch more gas and a slightly later handbrake release stops the roll-back.
