Use of mirrors · Driving test fault

Signalling

What it means

Checking the right mirrors before you give a signal, so your signal is based on what is actually around you - the mirror in mirror-signal-manoeuvre.

What a fault looks like

Signalling without a mirror check first is a driving fault; if the signal then misleads someone close behind or alongside, it can become serious.

What learners get wrong

Signalling on autopilot as a habit, without checking whether it even helps anyone or whether it is safe.

What we recommend

Treat the mirror as the trigger for the signal, not the other way round. Ask who the signal is for - if nobody, you may not need it.
