What it means
Checking mirrors before you change direction - turning, changing lane, overtaking or moving out around an obstruction - so you know what is behind and beside you first.
What a fault looks like
Changing direction with no mirror check is a driving fault; doing it into the path of a vehicle you never checked for is serious or dangerous. This is the second most common reason people fail.
What learners get wrong
Checking the mirror after starting to move, or checking the centre mirror but not the door mirror that covers the side you are moving towards.
What we recommend
Always mirror, signal, manoeuvre, in that order. Before any change of direction, the last thing before you move is the mirror on the side you are moving towards.
