Overtaking
What it means
Judging when it is safe, legal and necessary to overtake, with enough room and a clear view, and getting back in without cutting across.
What a fault looks like
An overtake with a slightly tight gap is a driving fault; overtaking near a bend, junction or into oncoming traffic is serious or dangerous.
What learners get wrong
Overtaking where the view ahead is not truly clear - a bend, a brow or a junction - or squeezing back in too close.
What we recommend
Only overtake when you can see a long clear stretch, can get past promptly, and have somewhere safe to return to. If in doubt, hold back.
