Set exercises · Driving test fault

Eyesight check

What it means

Reading a number plate from the required distance at the very start - 20 metres for a new-style plate, 20.5 metres for an old-style one - with glasses or lenses if you wear them.

What a fault looks like

This one is pass or fail on its own: get it wrong and the test ends before you drive. It is recorded as a serious fault.

What learners get wrong

Guessing rather than saying you cannot read it clearly, or leaving glasses you need behind.

What we recommend

Have your eyes tested before you book, and bring and wear any glasses or lenses. If you wear them for the check, wear them for the whole test.

Start with a first lesson.
