Set exercises · Driving test fault

Controlled (emergency) stop

What it means

If asked (about one test in seven), stopping the car promptly and under control as in an emergency, keeping it straight and not skidding.

What a fault looks like

A slightly slow or late reaction is a driving fault; skidding out of control, or not stopping promptly, is serious or dangerous.

What learners get wrong

Braking and de-clutching in the wrong order, or being so surprised the stop is slow.

What we recommend

React quickly: brake firmly and progressively, clutch down just before you stop to avoid stalling, and keep the steering straight. Your instructor will have practised the signal with you.
