Parking brake
What it means
Using the handbrake at the right times - to hold the car when stopped, on a hill, or before you leave it - and releasing it smoothly on the move.
What a fault looks like
Rolling because you did not apply it, or moving off against it, is a driving fault; a roll-back into another car on a hill can be serious.
What learners get wrong
Not applying it at a longer stop so the car creeps, or releasing it too early on a hill start and rolling back.
What we recommend
Apply it whenever you will be stopped for more than a moment or facing a slope, and release it only once you have the bite and gas to pull away cleanly.
