What it means
Braking smoothly and in good time, coming to a gentle stop, and adjusting speed early rather than braking hard at the last moment.
What a fault looks like
Late or harsh braking is a driving fault; braking so late you risk not stopping, or so hard the car behind is endangered, can be serious.
What learners get wrong
Reading the road too late, then braking hard, or riding the brake instead of easing off the gas earlier.
What we recommend
Look well ahead so you can brake early and progressively, easing off at the very end for a smooth stop. Early gentle braking is safer and clearer to others.
