What it means
Using the clutch smoothly to move off, change gear and stop without stalling, jerking or coasting with it held down.
What a fault looks like
Stalling or a jerky bite is usually a driving fault; coasting with the clutch down for long distances, losing control, can become serious.
What learners get wrong
Bringing the clutch up too fast at the bite, riding it, or coasting down to junctions with it pressed in.
What we recommend
Find the bite slowly and hold it steady, and keep the clutch up except when actually moving off, changing gear or about to stop.
