Control · Driving test fault

Accelerator

What it means

Using the accelerator smoothly and gently, giving just enough gas to move off, keep pace and climb hills without racing the engine.

What a fault looks like

Over-revving or jerky acceleration is a driving fault; a sudden surge that makes the car lurch toward a hazard can be serious.

What learners get wrong

Pressing too hard, especially when nervous, so the car jumps or the engine races at the biting point.

What we recommend

Treat the pedal as having a lot of travel and squeeze it gently. Smooth gas paired with a smooth clutch is what stops the lurch.
