What it means

Keeping a safe gap to the vehicle in front - at least two seconds in the dry, more in the wet - so you always have room to stop.

Following a bit too close is a driving fault; tailgating so you could not stop if they braked is serious or dangerous.

Closing right up on the car ahead in slow traffic, or forgetting to double the gap on a wet road.

Use the two-second rule: pick a fixed point and make sure two seconds pass between the car ahead reaching it and you. Double it in the wet.
