If you have an accident
If you are ever in a collision, the law says you must stop, even for a minor bump. Here is what to do, calmly and in order. This is general information, not legal advice.

At the scene
- Stop, switch off the engine and put your hazard lights on. Check whether anyone is hurt.
- If anyone is injured or the road is blocked or dangerous, call 999. For a non-emergency, report it to the police on 101.
- By law you must give your name, address and vehicle registration to anyone with reasonable grounds to ask. If someone is injured, also show your insurance details.
- If you do not give your details at the scene, you must report the accident to the police as soon as you can, and within 24 hours.
- Do not admit fault or agree to settle on the spot. Just exchange the facts.

Before you leave
- Photograph the vehicles, their positions, the damage, the road and any skid marks.
- Note the other driver's name, number and registration, and their insurer if you can.
- Get the names and numbers of any witnesses.

Afterwards
- Tell your insurer promptly, even if you do not plan to claim. Most policies require it.
- Watch for aches or shock that come on later, and see a doctor if you feel unwell.
