Passing Part 3 makes you qualified; great teaching makes you good. These are the ideas and resources that help you coach a driver, not just instruct one.

Coach, don't just tell

  • Client-centred learning: help the pupil work things out and take responsibility, rather than feeding them instructions. It is exactly what the standards check rewards.
  • Ask, don't tell: good questions build the judgement that lasts when you are not in the car.
  • Meet the learner in front of you, and give calm, honest feedback rather than a running commentary.

Frameworks worth knowing

  • The National Standard for driving cars (DVSA): what a safe, responsible driver and their trainer should be able to do.
  • The GDE matrix (Goals for Driver Education): the higher-order skills, attitudes and self-awareness behind safe driving that client-centred coaching draws on.

Keep learning (CPD)

  • CPD is voluntary, but recording a commitment (at least 7 hours a year) is highlighted to learners searching for an instructor.
  • DVSA's Despatch blog and news are the best way to keep up with rule and test changes.
